Community Orchards

Since the 1950s, 60 per cent of the UK’s orchards have disappeared, meaning not only have we lost a beautiful and traditional British sight, but also a major source of local fruit and the skills that go with maintaining an orchard. We are keen to see this trend reversed, in Chichester at least, and have set about reintroducing orchards to the area. Our first community orchard, of apples, pears and plums, including rare heritage Sussex varieties, was planted in Oaklands Park in 2011. We are now keen to roll out community orchards across Chichester, engaging local people. Juicing, harvesting and pruning events are planned as well as picnics and apple days. See the website calendar.
